Mickey Hunt,
exotic animal expert and
Vice President of International Wildlife, Ltd.…
I have known Dr. Joe Cannon, both personally and professionally, for over 25 years. Joe is a special veterinarian who not only possesses knowledge and experience, but has a genuine interest and a sincere caring for all animals, especially exotics.
I have seen him in action, be it in the middle of the night or coming in on his day off to care for one of his charges.
The stories told in this book are true-life adventures of a modern-day “Doc Tari.” To this day I continue to call on Joe for his knowledge of exotic animals that need his help. This is a great read for anyone who cares about these wonderful creatures. |

Many young boys and girls probably dream of growing up on a farm, having all kinds of wild animals as pets, and of one day becoming a veterinarian. Since everyone’s goal is to spend their life doing something they really enjoy, it would be a dream come true for someone who enjoys and loves animals to spend their life treating and caring for the very creatures they love so much.
This book is a collection of my memoirs. I am very grateful for having been able to live my dreams. My life began on an 80‑acre farm near a small Texas community called Greens Creek, about two hours south of Dallas. The farm was the home of just about every animal you could imagine. Many wild animals and birds also called Greens Creek their home. It was my interaction with farm animals and wild pets that helped me decide to become a veterinarian in the late 1950s. I received excellent training, having graduated from Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1969 and completing an internship at the University of California-Davis in 1970-1971. Over the next 35 years of my career, the most enjoyable part of my practice turned out to be the time spent at International Wildlife Park - Grand Prairie, Texas, where I held the position of resident veterinarian from 1972-1984.
In these chapters you will meet unforgettable animal characters: Silky Harris the fox, Red the hawk, Damien the African elephant, Ellie the orphan elk, Squeaky the cheetah, Judy the chimp from Daktari, Dudley the blackbuck antelope, Big Daddy the killer hippo, Werewolf the ugly lion, Football the baby rhino, and many more. You also will travel along on wild animal captures and immobilizations, including a trip to Mexico, and see photographs of many of the exciting events.
Some stories are warm, some are amusing, and some are downright scary, but the one thing they all have in common is that they are about animals, their behavior, and their wonderful interactions with man. It is with the utmost admiration for all of these magnificent creatures that this book was written, and with the hope that you, the reader, will come away with a better understanding and appreciation for how God’s creatures interact with man, as well as themselves.
